John Henry Blatter and Stephen Vitiello Discuss Sound Art

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Looking for something to do over the weekend? On Saturday, November 21 from 12 to 1 pm, 1708 Gallery will host a lecture on sound art with current exhibiting artist John Henry Blatter and sound artist Stephen Vitiello. The event is free and open to the public.

New Works by John Henry Blatter is currently on display at 1708 Gallery through Saturday, November 28. Blatter’s work combines the use of sound, video and environment to sculpt an experience in the space he is working in, which is exactly what he has done at 1708 Gallery. New Works features site-specific installation pieces. To learn more about Blatter, visit his website here.

Stephen Vitiello is currently an associate professor of kinetic imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). As an electronic musician and sound artist, Stephen Vitiello transforms the incidental atmospheric noises around us into more mesmerizing soundscapes that alter our perception of the surrounding environment. To learn more about Vitiello, visit his website here.

We hope to see you at 1708 Gallery on Saturday!

Poe’s Playground at Linden Row Inn

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

1708 Gallery organizes small exhibitions for Linden Row Inn, a historic Inn located at 100 East Franklin Street. The work is displayed in their lobby and dining room for guests and the public. Linden Row Inn is part of the First Friday Gallery walk, every first Friday of the month from 7-10 pm.

Poe’s Playground is a collection of work inspired by Poe’s Life, Art and Places he haunted during his lifetime. Young Edgar played in the courtyards of this very inn as a young child. His stories inspire artists to examine what may be creepy, melancholy or a fear as simple as wondering what may lurk under the bed. The exhibition features artists Caryl Burtner, Jamie Burwell Mixon, Mark Chatterley, Kathryn Henry-Choisser, John Moser, Amie Oliver, Noah Scalin and Chris Semtner. Poe’s Playground will be on view until August 25th and will then travel to the Piedmont Arts Center in Martinsville, VA in September of 2010.
