1708 Gallery's Arts for All outreach program engages a frequently overlooked segment of our community including the homeless and individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. Arts for All provides this segment of our community an opportunity to make art part of their lives through engagement in the 1708 Gallery experience and by providing access to the creative process.
Arts For All Exhibition
May 7 - 21, 2010
1708 Gallery presents the work created in the Arts for All outreach program in an exhibition opening at 7:00pm on May 7th through May 21st, 2010.
1708 Gallery’s Arts for All outreach program engages individuals who are experiencing homelessness and those affected by physical and developmental disabilities in the creative process. Sculptor Robert Walz has been working with the after school students at The Greater Richmond ARC and ARC’s Camp Baker in Chesterfield and multi-media artist Mariam Eqbal with individuals served by The Daily Planet and the Henrico County Community Services Board. The exhibition will feature the work created in a series of workshops over the past year.
The exhibition will also feature documentaries of some of the workshop participants produced by students from the VCU Art School’s Kinetic Imaging program.
Working in collaboration with the Greater Richmond ARC, who serves people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities and The Daily Planet, who serves the homeless and the mentally ill of the Greater Richmond community - Arts for All provides this community the opportunity to experience, investigate, discover and be inspired by contemporary art. 1708 Gallery is providing access to artist-led exhibition tours and participatory arts activities led by professional artists.
The program is funded in part by the Richard and Caroline T. Gwathmey Memorial Trust, the Community Foundation serving Richmond and Central Virginia, and the Garland and Agnes Taylor Gray Foundation.
