Lantern Making Workshops and Community Lantern Parade
1708 Gallery’s InLight Richmond 2011 will kick-off with a Community Lantern Parade on Friday, October 21, 2011. 1708 has organized a series of artful lantern making workshops to provide an opportunity for Richmonders to participate in InLight. Most of the workshops are free and open to all ages and skill levels unless otherwise noted. See a list of the workshops below.
In addition to the public workshops 1708 Gallery is pleased to present workshops for a variety of community organizations including The Boys and Girls Club, The Daily Planet, SCAN, CARITAS and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Schools in the Richmond region are also invited to participate through their classes.
To participate in InLight Richmond's Community Lantern Parade bring a lantern you've made at home, in one of our public workshops or make one with us just before the parade kicks off InLight Richmond 2011. We will gather on the brick patio at Tredegar at 7 p.m. (look for all the lanterns) where you will receive an LED candle for your lantern. The parade will begin at 7:30 p.m. Paid parking is available at the Federal Reserve Parking Deck (5th St. and Bragg St.).

Lantern Making at VMFA
1 to 4 pm, VMFA, 200 N. Boulevard
Join the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and community partner 1708 Gallery in a celebration of Egyptian art and culture. This VMFA day of discovery includes music, tours, live storytelling, percussion performances and exploration of ancient Egyptian art. Join us in activity making that includes creating your own lantern to commemorating the Egyptian celebration of light.

InLight Richmond 2010:
1708 Gallery’s InLight Richmond 2010, held on Friday, October 22nd kicked-off with a Community Lantern Parade in Richmond’s historic Shockoe Slip. 1708 organized a series of artful lantern making workshops to provide an opportunity for Richmonders to participate in InLight.
Workshops were led by renowned artists like George Ferrandi and Noah Scalin. 1708 was pleased to partner with neighborhood organizations such as the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, the Children’s Museum of Richmond and Quirk Gallery. In addition to the public workshops, 1708 also worked with local elementary schools and community partners like Caritas, SCAN, and the Daily Planet to engage diverse populations in the creative process.

InLight Richmond 2009:
1708 Gallery offered a series of Lantern Making workshops in preparation for the Community Lantern Parade which kicked-off InLight Richmond 2009 on Friday, September 25, 2009.
Workshops were led by Richmond artists including Sarah Hand, Matt Lively, Noah Scalin, Robert Walz, Paul Teeples and Art on Wheels and featured unique lantern making methods. In addition to workshops for the general public, workshops were organized for a variety of community groups including the Greater Richmond ARC, SupportOne, Inc, and a group of high school students. The free lantern making fest during September’s First Friday resulted in over 200 lanterns created by our visitors!
