Mending Walls at Tredegar

February 5 – May 9, 2021

Mending Walls is a public art project that began in response to the public, widespread outcries against racial and social injustices in 2020. The project brings together artists of different cultures and backgrounds to form a unique connection and create public art that gives the artists an opportunity to tell their stories collaboratively in order to fuel empathy and express healing through connection.

In October of 2020, Mending Walls brought together a second round of artists at Historic Tredegar, Richmond, VA to address current circumstance in society and how we can move forward as a community through understanding and collaboration in partnership with the local entities: Kelli Lemon, Studio Two Three, 1708 Gallery, The Arts District, and Venture Richmond.

The artists transformed plywood that had previously boarded the windows and doors of local RVA businesses at the height of the active demonstrations and protests following the death of George Floyd. Each of the works created amplifies the voices of the people of Richmond who took action against racial and social injustices during this time and contributes to the conversation of the Black Lives Matter movement.
