About 1708 Gallery:
1708 Gallery is a non-profit exhibition space with a mission to present exceptional new art in Richmond, Virginia. 1708 Gallery is committed to providing opportunities for artistic innovation for emerging and established artists and to expanding the understanding and appreciation of new art for the public. Founded in 1978, the Gallery strives to give public exposure and opportunity to emerging and established artists.
1708 Gallery is led by a Board of Directors that includes artists, art educators, and a diverse group of community members from a wide rage of professions. Through a variety of exhibitions, educational programs, and special events, 1708 Gallery reaches a diverse group of constituents. In the 2009-2010 Exhibition Season 1708 Gallery mounted 14 exhibitions including InLight Richmond, a large-scale outdoor art exhibition, and served an audience of 24,000.
Executive Director reports to: The President of the Board of Directors
Primary Responsibilities: Works with the Board of Directors to support the Gallery’s mission and implement Board policy; leads the fundraising, functions as the public representative of the Gallery;; oversees the Gallery exhibition and program implementation; and manages the day-to-day operations of the Gallery.
- Works with the Board of Directors
- Interfaces with the President and Board to initiate short and long range planning.
- Works to achieve the goals established.
- Works with the Development Committee to lead and coordinate the annual fundraising strategies, special activities and events,
- Supports the Board Development and Nominating Committee with Board prospect identification and recruitment.
- Works with the Finance Committee to establish the annual budget and manage the Gallery resources.
- Participates in Committee meetings and coordinates Committee activities.
- Makes recommendations to the Board for new and improved initiatives.
- Leads Gallery Fundraising
- Oversees all development activities.
- Identifies new revenue sources.
- Researches and writes grants.
- Cultivates new and existing donors
- Initiates new revenue-generating events in collaboration with the Development Committee.
- Calls on corporations and donors or accompanies Board members on those calls.
- Manages earned income sources including art sales and gallery rentals
- Functions as the Public Representative of the Gallery
- Represents 1708 Gallery to local, regional, and national communities in public gatherings and meetings.
- Speaks on behalf of the Gallery as needed.
- Advocates for the Gallery to community leaders, current or prospective donors, and members.
- Works with designated board leadership to develop and implement a strategic communications and marketing plan.
- Oversees Implementation of Gallery Exhibitions and Programs
- Works with the Exhibition Committee and the Education and Outreach Committee to maintain professional standards and quality programming.
- Contributes vision and support to exhibitions, programs and outreach activities.
- Oversees exhibition installations and program presentations.
- Manages Day-to-Day Operations of the Gallery
- Develops and oversees the budget in collaboration with the Finance Committee.
- Designs, documents and monitors operational systems and procedures.
- Recruits, hires, supervises, and annually evaluates staff with input from the President, Immediate Past President, and the President-Elect.
- Provides leadership and motivation to the staff and volunteers through job descriptions and performance goals and ensures collaborative teamwork.
- Manages and ensures maintenance of Gallery appearance and facilities.
Qualifications:
The selected candidate will have a degree in non-profit management, arts administration, or art history, studio art, or comparable professional experience including a broad-based knowledge of contemporary visual arts and at least three years experience in arts/organization management. A proven track record in fundraising; budget development and management; as well as program presentation are required. Demonstrated organizational, communications and writing skills and ability to work effectively and diplomatically with diverse audiences and constituencies are a must. Experience as a manager or administrator in a non-profit, organization is preferred.

Compensation is competitive and appropriate for the position and the successful candidate’s background and experience.

1708 Gallery offers part-time and full-time non-paid internship positions for credit and non-credit. Interns receive hands-on experience and resume-building skills in all aspects of 1708 Gallery's operations, including:
- installation and de-installation of exhibitions and artist relations
- gallery openings and receptions and event planning
- educational programs, tours, and gallery sitting
- fundraising, PR, and marketing
- non-profit gallery administration
