MEDIA X: Opening and Panel Discussion

October 9th, 2008

Firing Jets 1 – Althea Georgelas

Please join us on Friday, October 17th, at 6pm for a panel discussion and opening of the exhibition Media X. The exhibition and panel discussion explore how media outlets frequently mislead the public by failing to provide important facts and information in their coverage of current events and news

The nine international artists, including Matt Kenyon, Chris Barr, Véronique Côté, Patrick Gregory, Kalika Gorski, Rachele Riley, Michael Takeo Magruder, Bob Paris and Althea Georgelas, seek to build awareness to the normality of our present day fears and blindness toward conditions left unanswered by using the vocabulary and the spectacle of the media to talk about the media itself. Either commenting on the media’s manipulation of news or documenting the media’s placement of importance on information, the Media X artists expose a visual crossover between what we see and what we don’t. In doing so the Media X artists turn the tables on the media machine in hopes of a mirrored documentation which represents an individual presence in our fast paced media driven world.

The panel discussion will include Vaughn Garland, the curator, exhibiting artists and special guest Robert Hodierne, Associate Professor of Journalism at the University of Richmond. Robert began his 40-year journalism career as a freelance photographer covering the Vietnam War. Since then Mr. Hodierne has worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers, wire services, magazines, television, radio and the Internet. In 1981 he was part of a team that won most American journalism awards including the Pulitzer Prize.

Also, check out the Media X site.
