Come out and support 1708 Gallery at CultureWorks’ CultshaXpo at the Science Museum of Virginia on Saturday, June 25th from 10 AM – 5 PM!

In preparation for InLight Richmond 2011, we will be hosting an all-day, hands-on lantern-making workshop at CultshaXpo. Bring your family and friends and join us!  Produced by CultureWorks, CultshaXpo offers Richmond the opportunity to learn more about and support area non-profits like 1708 Gallery AT NO EXPENSE TO YOU.

Visitors to CultshaXpo will register as Cultural Shareholders. (We recommend that you register in advance – http://www.richmondcultureworks.org/cultsha).  Cultural Shareholders receive FREE CultshaBucks.  Up to $50,000 in CultshaBucks will be distributed in envelopes with various amounts from $10-$100 inside.  This is FREE money to use and we hope that you will spend it with 1708 Gallery! At the end of the event, all participating organizations will trade in the CultshaBucks that they have received for REAL dollars.

This is the first in a series of lantern making workshops organized by 1708 Gallery.  Workshops will take place throughout the summer and fall in preparation for the Community Lantern Parade that kicks off InLight Richmond 2011. InLight Richmond 2011 will take place along the downtown river front on a site that stretches from the Belle Isle parking lot to MeadWestvaco and includes the American Civil War Center at Tredegar.

InLight 2011 and the lantern making workshops and parade are generously sponsored by Altria, MeadWestvaco and Dominion Resources.

Greg Stewart Exhibition Opening on June First Friday!

May 11th, 2011

1708 Gallery’s next exhibition will open during the First Friday Art Walk on June 3. Meet Greg Stewart and view his show, Engine of Bones Man the Handyman, during our open reception from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., featuring complementary appetizers and a cash bar. An artist’s talk will take place on the following first Friday, July 1st, at 7 p.m.

Engine of Bones Man the Handyman is inspired by the role of humans in a partially imaginary world dominated by migration and survival. Stewart’s portable structures—small fruit trees emerging from the bodies of deer-like forms—are part migrating herd, part sustenance-providing orchard and suggest mutation and movement as a form of adaptability. Also on display will be tools and accessories created from the “hides” of these animals, as well as digital prints documenting them in an urban environment.

For more information about this exhibition, read the press release.

May First Friday!

May 3rd, 2011

Springtime is here and there are plenty of things to do!   Richmond’s lovely First Friday Art Walk is May 6th which includes 40 venues offering great food, art, and entertainment.

Here at 1708 Gallery, we are showcasing the exhibitions of Michael McFalls’ Recent Work and Kevin Jones’ Chemtrail.  These highly sculptural exhibitions inspire us to investigate the objects that make up our world and the cultural significance of these objects.  Jones’ work examines the base elements derived from scientific research and what, if any, meaning that holds.  McFalls’ work investigates the dualities that exist between the natural and the man-made, and pushes the viewer to contemplate the societal implications of both.  For further information regarding these exhibitions please visit the event page.   There will be a First Friday Reception including food and beverages from 6 to 10pm on May 6th.

Also, don’t forget to check out the current exhibition at our satellite space, Richmond’s historic Linden Row Inn, Art as the Mother Tongue: A Dialogue between East and West, curated by Richmond artist and 1708 board member Amie Oliver.  This exhibition explores the universality of art over obstacles like language barriers and cultural diversities.  For more information and location, visit the event page.

Kevin Jones – Chemtrail + Michael Mcfalls – Recent Works

April 13th, 2011

1708 Gallery invites you to experience our two latest exhibitions opening on April 22. Michael McFalls’ “Recent Works” and Kevin Jones’ “Chemtrail” encourage us to take a closer look at our environments and the objects within them. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 22, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. and will include a talk by the artists at 6:30 p.m., complimentary hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. The exhibitions will be on view through Saturday, May 28, 2011.

Michael McFalls’ sculptures combine natural materials and the man-made. He invites the viewer to consider the lingering, or potentially novel, significance of materials that are often taken for granted.

Through digitally produced images and a video installation, Kevin Jones examines systems found in scientific investigation. Jones “seeks to question our understanding of the physical world and to test and undermine scientific authority.”

For more information, visit the event page here.
