Announcing the InLight 2012 Award Winners!

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

1708 Gallery is pleased to announce the awards from its fifth annual InLight Richmond. Last night InLight 2012 illuminated the facades, storefront windows, parking lots and alleyways of Richmond’s downtown Arts & Culture District with light-based art, performances and the Community Lantern Parade. Thousands from the greater Richmond community attended the free, one-night event to experience and participate in engaging and dynamic artworks by national artists installed outside the gallery walls.

The InLight Richmond 2012 juror, Melissa Ho, Assistant Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, selected Virginia artist Devon Johnson’s Noms de Pays for the Best in Show Award. Johnson’s digitally converted 8mm film evokes feelings of time and loss and the fleetingness of memory. Installed in a courtyard in downtown Richmond, Virginia, the intimacy of the space and a sense of history in the architecture extended this sense of nostalgia.

Ho also selected New York artist Jason Peters’ installation Meandering Dynamics, constructed with found buckets, LED lights and cable, for the Best in Green Award.

InLight Richmond 2012 attendees were invited to vote for their favorite work of art by texting. The People’s Choice Award was given to Richmond, Virginia’s own Nelly Kate and Dave Watkins for their interactive audio visual installation and performance, Interstitial Transduction.

Bring Your Own Beamer to InLight on Nov 2nd!

Calling All Artists for BYOB-RVA

at 1708 Gallery’s InLight Richmond
Friday, November 2, 7 p.m. to midnight

Organized by Norberto Gomez, Jr., BYOB-RVA is a feature of InLight Richmond 2012, 1708 Gallery’s 5th annual public exhibition of light-based art and performances.

BYOB or Bring Your Own Beamer is a series of one-night exhibitions hosting artists and their beamers (projectors). All artists are invited to show work during BYOB-RVA, with the only requirement being they provide their own projector (open to interpretation) and work. Installation is free-form, with artists reacting to the space and their fellow beamers throughout the night.

Beamers, or projectors, may consist of typical digital projectors used by computers or TVs, overhead projectors, or even a child’s toy. Other “screen” materials like computer monitors or televisions are also acceptable. BYOB-RVA is also open to creative interpretations of a “projector,” light & dark as medium, the moving image, music/sound/noise, installation, shadow-performance, etc. Please bring your cords, dvd players, computers, VCR, extra power strips, etc.

First initiated by Rafaël Rozendaal in 2010, over 80 BYOB events have taken place throughout the world, from Berlin and Tokyo, to San Francisco and New York City.

For more information check out the BYOB-RVA Facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/events/531875486838474/ or email Norberto at info@norbertogomezjr.com.

Announcing InLight Richmond 2012 Call for Entries!

Monday, June 4th, 2012

1708 Gallery invites artists working in all media and disciplines, including performance, to submit proposals for InLight Richmond 2012, 1708 Gallery’s 5th annual one-night, juried, public exhibition of light-based art and performance. InLight Richmond 2012 will take place on Friday, November 2 along the Broad Street corridor, 1708 Gallery’s downtown neighborhood. The juror for InLight Richmond 2012 is Melissa Ho, assistant curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Proposals should involve, be inspired by, investigate, or interpret themes of light, from light as medium to light as concept. Existing work, as well as proposals for new projects, will be considered. 1708 Gallery encourages artists to propose projects that respond directly to the site. In addition to technical and production support, an honorarium of $300 will be given to each project. All entries are eligible for the Best in Show award ($1500) and the People’s Choice Award ($500). Green projects are encouraged, though not required. All green entries are also eligible for the Best in Green award ($1500).

1708 Gallery was one of the first organizations to reinvest in this downtown neighborhood, moving to Broad Street in 2001. This former retail center of the south is located in Monroe Ward, bordered to the north by historic Jackson Ward (once known as the “Harlem of the South”), to the east by the Convention Center and city and state government buildings, and to the west by Virginia Commonwealth University. Now host to numerous galleries, studios, businesses and restaurants, and the future home of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Institute of Contemporary Art (http://ica.vcu.edu), the Broad Street corridor has experienced a rebirth. Yet it still retains an urban vitality as thrift stores, record shops and boutiques share the sidewalk with vacant sites and historic properties and graffiti tags vie with murals. The neighborhood is now host to a monthly gallery night that draws thousands of visitors, from VCU art students and faculty to the wider Richmond community.

Potential sites for installations and performances include sidewalks, streets and side streets, medians, exterior walls, alleys, parking areas, storefronts, and vacant interiors. Images of the potential sites for installations can be viewed by visiting www.1708gallery.org/enter-inlight. You may propose a specific site for both pre-existing and site-responsive works. However, 1708 Gallery reserves the right to make final assignments. Please indicate if your work is site-specific on your entry form.

The deadline for submissions is midnight, July 15, 2012.

For more information about InLight Richmond 2012 and to submit a proposal, please visit: www.1708gallery.org/enter-inlight.

Arts for All Mural Completed!

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

1708′s Arts for All program engages frequently overlooked segments of our community by providing access to the creative process. Through participatory workshops taught by professional artists and artist-led exhibition tours Arts for All provides individuals with an opportunity to make art an important part of their lives.

Our most recent project partners with Richmond’s Offender Aid and Restoration (OAR) whose mission is to “provide individuals and families affected by incarceration with transition services that support safe and successful reintegration into the community.”

Local artist Matthew Shelton, with the help of 1708 Gallery interns, has worked with the clients of OAR over the past  few months to create a public mural that would tell a story they wished to share with the Richmond community. The mural has officially been completed and is scheduled  to be install this month. Stay tuned for details about the unveiling ceremony.

Entitled The Transformation, this mural is the result of  efforts by the following OAR clients and volunteers: Michael Gayles, Patrick & Sam Burwell, Eric Byrd, George Lee, “Cheeks,” Denise Banhart, William Jackson, Michael Mitchell, Daryl Clark, Eugene Harris, Carol Cooper, Bertrand Morin, Nicolai Noel, Erin Willett, and Matt Shelton.
