1708 Gallery Announces Cindy Neuschwander Scholarship

April 29th, 2013

1708 Gallery is pleased to announce the annual Cindy Neuschwander Scholarship, established in honor of the memory, generosity of spirit, and artistic talents of Cindy Neuschwander, an artist and long-time 1708 supporter.

Given annually to a graduating high school senior who plans to study studio art, this $1000 scholarship will be awarded based on artistic merit and ambition. Each year, this scholarship will recognize a student who is talented, passionate and who shows a willingness to explore and discover art in meaningful ways that can inspire and enhance their lives and the lives of those around them.

1708 Gallery congratulates Haylie Zapantis as the winner of the inaugural Cindy Neuschwander Scholarship. A soon-to-be-graduate of Lee Davis High School, Haylie plans to study at Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland.

Her nominating teacher stated, “As an artist Haylie is mature and prolific-exploring one theme throughout her high school career. Her outstanding work ethic has allowed her to be an honors student in addition to an amazing young artist.”

1708 Gallery’s 2013-2014 Exhibition Season is dedicated to Cindy Neuschwander.

Curated by Travis Fullerton and Paul Thulin, Still Action! features photographers who are investigating performative and scenographic aspects of image-making; artists interested in orchestrating an action for the camera with the intent of unveiling a hidden, purely visual, purely photographic reality that is specific to the scene in which they are participating. Their works speak to the power of a photograph to surpass the witnessed event in formal complexity, cultural critique, and wonder.

The photographers in Still Action! represent a range of experiences and reflect the global nature of contemporary art, as their respective geographies include New Zealand, England, and New York, NY. Still Action! features works by Kevin Cooley, Sharon Harper, Seba Kurtis, Tokihiro Sato, Geoffrey Short, and Kevin Van Aelst.

MIXOLOGY, 1708 Gallery’s 23rd Annual Art Auction Benefit, on Saturday, April 6, 2013, is 1708’s biggest fundraiser. Each year, 1708 invites a diverse mix of Richmond’s most talented artists to participate in the auction. These artists range from established to emerging and present an array of paintings, photography, prints and sculpture. Through their participation, we are able to introduce dynamic contemporary artists to Richmond.  In addition to supporting 1708—a foundation of the Richmond arts community—the Auction also supports many of these talented artists through the commission received through Auction sales.

We are thrilled to announce that the featured artist and honorary chair of this year’s auction is acclaimed street artist Shepard Fairey. Fairey’s artwork is truly novel, audacious and crosses all boundaries from skateboard culture to museums. Fairey will create new work especially for MIXOLOGY and will be our special guest on April 6.

Shepard Fairey’s contribution is a generous endorsement of our role in Richmond’s arts community. We invite you to help 1708 continue to be a leader of this community and purchase admission or a sponsorship to 1708 Gallery’s MIXOLOGY.

Join us for Jessica Segall’s opening reception this Friday!

February 18th, 2013

1708 Gallery invited you to join us for the opening reception of our latest exhibition, Jessica Segall: A Thirsty Person, on view from February 22 to March 16, 2013. Please join us for an artist talk and opening reception on Friday, February 22 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jessica Segall’s work investigates the link between creativity and survival, focusing on the production of energy in practical and alchemical forms. A Thirsty Person shares new sculpture, drawings and video produced from Segall’s travels to remote places such as the Arctic and Mongolia, and explores themes such as risk, vulnerability and a conscious ecology through the development of off-grid technologies. The labor-intensive and often humorous work necessitates collaboration with video, sound, and costume design, and illustrates the uninhabitable places upon which we all depend for survival.

December 7th, 2012

We are so saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Cindy Neuschwander.

A longtime supporter and Emeritus council member, Cindy’s influence helped shape 1708 into the organization it is today. A beloved member of Richmond’s arts community, we will remember her bright face, her lovely paintings, and her incredible strength.
